The Academy of the Arts at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is offering a new On Stage series this year, bringing audiences a group of musical and theatrical productions featuring both young and seasoned performers.

Dr. Rosilee Russell of Fort Smith, executive director of the Academy, said the series offers a variety of performances, beginning in September and continuing into May.

“It’s a beautiful mix of choral, orchestral and theatrical productions,” said Russell, “and it’s all family entertainment.”

The entire series of 12 events is priced at $99 for adults and $85 for children 10 and under, with group rates also available. Ticket information is available at the UAFS Box Office, 479-788-7300, with individual tickets going on sale the first week of September.

“We kick off the year Sept. 26 with ‘The Magic of the Piano,’” said Russell, “which features pianist Scott Carrell, who was here last year for our program titled ‘4 Pianos and Some Kids.’ We’re bringing him back by popular demand, and he will dazzle the audience with music from ragtime to jazz to classical.”

Russell will be a guest pianist with Carrell, who is professor of piano with Harding University.

“The other professional performance will be on Feb. 28 and March 1 when we present ‘Old Time Gospel Hour,’ an event that will feature vocalists Barry Law, Pam Camp, Brian Gary, a men’s Gaither quartet, the Oak Cliff Baptist Church choir and many more,” said Russell. “Add to that the fantastic children’s shows, and it’s going to be a variety-filled year.”

Children’s performances will feature the Academy Kidz, a group of children who are six and seven years old; Academy Playerz, children in third through sixth grade; Xtreme Teenz, teenagers presenting full-length productions; the Academy Children’s Choir, more than 200 children in grades 3-6; and the Youth Honor Symphony Orchestra, grade 9 through age 25.

“The youth orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra,” said Russell, “and it is only one of three in the entire state. It’s a really big deal to hear a youth symphonic orchestra play major symphonic works.”
