Western Arkansas Ballet presents 28th Annual The Nutcracker

This year will be the 28th Annual presentation of the time-honored holiday classic The Nutcracker! A production described as lavish, exciting, and wonderful, it is one you will not want to miss! Clara and her Nutcracker Prince, along with all their friends, return for two delightful performances on Saturday, December 14, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 15, at 2:30 pm at the Arkansas Best Corporation Performing Arts Center in Fort Smith, AR.

In addition to a cast of over 115 area dancers, this year’s performances will feature professional dancers Antoinette Klimek as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Arion Tanabe as the Cavalier. Featured artists are Audra Beneux as Clara and Zeek Wright as the Nutcracker Prince.

Executive Artistic Director and choreographer Melissa Schoenfeld delights in adding new flourishes to the ballet each new season. This year’s audiences can look forward to the addition of new costumes, designed and constructed by the Ballet’s Wardrobe Manager, Nancy Turner, as well as iconic set pieces of the exquisite living room of Herr and Frau Stahlbaum, the lively mouse battle at midnight, the elegance and flurry of the Land of Snow, and the sugary delicateness of the Kingdom of Sweets!

The Nutcracker has been a wonderful holiday tradition for generations; however, when the ballet was originally choreographed and performed in 1892, it was not a huge success. In fact, The Nutcracker ballet did not gain its enormous popularity until the 1960s. It has since been performed by countless ballet companies all over the world.
