GREENWOOD HERITAGE (3-27-13): The Martha Little family

Last week I wrote about John Gray Little’s Third child Martha Little. This week I will tell you what I learned about her children and their families.

Her first born child was Roy C. Mickle, born in Arkansas about 1867. I learned of his existence in the 1880 Federal Census record. He was 13 at the time and lived with his parents George Whitfield Mickle and Martha Ann Little. According to that census record the family lived in Marion, Sebastian County, AR. I wasn’t able to find any other documents for him.

The next child born to them was Sarah Ellen Mickle. She was born Oct. 10, 1873 in Texas somewhere. She was 7 years old when the 1880 census was taken. Like I stated in the paragraph above, they were living in Sebastian County, AR at this time. She lived in our area most of her life. I found a copy of an Arkansas marriage certificate on ancestry.com saying she married Frederick G. Pryor March 20, 1890.

Sarah died Dec. 11, 1952 at the age of 79, in Sebastian County, AR. Her burial was in Douglass Cemetery, Jenny Lind, Sebastian County, AR.

Her husband Fredrick died Dec. 11, 1957 in Smith, Cleveland, AR. His burial location was also in the Douglass Cemetery.

Sarah and Fred Pryor had a large family and I could fill a book about all of them. But due to lack of space and time I will only touch on the ones that I was easily able to find information on. The first child I could find any information about was George Pryor born Dec. 15, 1890 in this area of Arkansas. He only lived until 1919 when he was 29 years old. Next was Myrtle E. born Aug. 22, 1895 in Bonanza, Sebastian County, AR. She married William E. Jones Oct. 20, 1915 and had about 8 children. Harmon Alonzo Pryor was next, born Sept. 27, 1897 in Arkansas. I found no marriage certificate for him, but federal census records show he lived in Sebastian County until about the late 1940’s or 1950’s. He lived in California for a few years but he was buried in Jenny Lind, Sebastian County, AR. Walter Irvin Pryor came along Nov. 10, 1898 also in Bonanza, Sebastian County, AR. He married Stella Roberts May 26, 1919 at the age of 20. They had at least 3 children. A girl named Carmen E. Pryor was born about 1898. The 1920 Federal Census finds her living in Marion, Sebastian County, AR, age 22 and single. Another girl, Lillian E. was born Jan. 17, 1901. She married David T. Tillory April 3, 1929. She was 28 years old and they had two children, Ida E. Tillory and Joan Tillory. Another girl named Annie Elizabeth Pryor was born Sept. 17, 1902 in Sebastian County, AR. She married Sigsby Hawthorne when she was only 16 on May 24, 1919. They had 6 children together. Ada Oretta Pryor was born March 10, 1905. When she grew up she married Homer William Whitmore. She died 1981 in California. We are not done yet. Luther Pryor was born Feb. 19, 1909, also in Sebastian County, AR. I didn’t find a marriage certificate for him. According to the 1940 Federal Census he lived in LeFlore County, Ok. He was 31 at the time and single. Eugene Herbert Pryor was born April 27, 1911 in Arkansas City, AR. He married Elsie Gleason on Mar. 4, 1933 and they had a daughter named Sherley Jean Pryor. In 1935 they lived in Carlsbad, N.M. In 1940 they came back to Sebastian County for a few years. He died Nov. 1986, age 75, Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico. The last child I found any record of was Paul Pryor born Mar. 22, 1913. He married Elizabeth Avis Black on Dec. 18, 1935 in Sebastian County, AR. They had two daughters, Ruth and Ella L. Pryor. I think these are all of Sarah Mickle’s and Fred Pryor’s children!

Now we go way back to the beginning of this article and continue on with Martha Little’s children. A son was born to Martha Ann Little and George Whitfield Mickle. His name was Harmon Dolphus Mickle and he was born Oct. 25, 1875 in Texas. (Find a Grave Index says birth date is Oct. 5, 1885). But by the time of the 1880 Fed. Census he was living in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Federal Census records for 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 show Harmon D. living in Marion, Sebastian County, Arkansas. These records show he was single and living with his mother Martha up until the 1930 census. In the Census for 1930 he is living with Cleveland and Lucy Keling, Hazel Keling, age 16 and Louis Hopkins. I’m not sure who these people are but it says on the census that Harmon is a brother-in-law. I glanced ahead and discovered that Lucy G. Mickle is a sister of Harmon and she married a Clement Keating. Notice the difference in spelling. We will get to Lucy next. Harmon Dol Mickle died Nov. 3, 1936 and was buried at White Bluff, Sebastian County, AR. I found this information in the Arkansas Death Index and a “Find a Grave Index: Arkansas”.

Like I mentioned above Lucy G. Mickle is the next child of Martha Ann Little and George Mickle. She was born May 29, 1879 in Texas. On Dec. 15, 1897 she married Clement Keating. They had two children, Vennie born in 1905 and Hazel born in 1913. Lucy was 19 at the time and they married in Sebastian County.

A son was born next, named John Lee Mickle. He was born Jan. 27, 1881 in Arkansas. He married Oct. 30, 1912 someone by the name of Jimmy C. Gammell. 1900 and 1910 Federal Census show John Lee single, living with mother Martha and his home Sebastian County, AR. Jimmy is kind of a strange name for a girl. I don’t know anything about her. They had two children, Gussie V. born in 1914 and Bertis born in 1915. John Lee died April 8, 1961.

The last child born to Martha and George is a girl named Lillie Belle Mickle. She is born June 1884 in Arkansas. She married at the age of 16, Dec. 22, 1900. Her husband was Thomas T. Hopkins. They had 4 children; Alba born in 1910, La Vern in 1911, Charles in 1917 and Katharine in 1921. Lillie Belle died Nov. 6, 1927 at the young age of 43 in Oklahoma.

Next week we will do the fourth child of John Gray Little. His name is Howell W. Little and he and his wife had a huge family also.
