GREENWOOD HERITAGE (4-17-13): Little number five

Ervin D. Little is the fifth son of Howell and Sarah Little. He was born Feb. 6, 1881 in Wilson County, Texas. Some sources spelled his name Ervinius Adolphus Little. I found most of his information on census records. I found a copy of the 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Erving D. Little, age 20, single and his location as Justice Precinct 4, Coke County, Texas. It shows him living with his parents and siblings. His younger siblings on this census are Jefferson G. age 18, George O age 15, Lloyd E. age 9 and Ida O. is only 7.

On the 1910 census his name is E.D. Little and he is married, his wife’s name is Montie. They have one child named Myrtle, age 4. Montie’s maiden name is questionable at this point of my research. I found a marriage certificate that showed an I J Little married a Montie Holliday in 1935. But the location of the marriage was Washington County, Arkansas and by 1935 Erving would have been 53 or 54. Family trees show Erving marrying Montie Baker in 1903.

I was able to find out some information about Monte Roy Baker. She was born Feb. 20, 1883 in Texas. When she was age 20 she married Ervin D. Little. They had a child named Leslie C. born in 1904 and another one named Myrtle Little born in 1906. Monte’s father was Rubin Corneilus Baker and her mother Elizabeth Lawhon. To further disprove the 1935 marriage to another woman, I found a copy of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census for Montie Little. It states that she was 57, married, living in Coke County on a farm and on the census with her is Erving D. Little who is 59 at this time. Monte died in 1976 when she was 93 years old.

I examined the 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Erving Little and it has his name listed as just E D Little. He is now 28 years old and married, it says his spouse’s name is Monte Little. They live at Justice Precinct 4, Coke County, Texas. A new addition is added to this census, Myrtle, age 4. The 1920 Census for Erving A. (notice it has the middle initial A. this time) has the same information as the 1910 census except that he is now 38 and has another child named Ruthie who is 8 and Myrtle is now 14.

The last census I found for Erving D. is the 1940 U.S. Federal Census. They are living in rural Coke County, Texas, on a farm and occupation for Erving is a farmer.

The Texas Death Index for Erving Little says he died June 10, 1969 in Runnels, Texas. It gives his marital status as single. What happened to his wife Monte by this time? Monte supposedly died in 1976 or did she divorce him? Ervin’s Social Security Death Index says he died June 15, 1969 and gives his last residence as Bronte, Coke County, Texas. I also found a document entitled “Find a Grave” for E.D. Little. It doesn’t give us a lot of information. It gives us his birth as 1881 and death as 1969. His burial is at Mule Creek Cemetery, Tennyson, Coke County, Texas.

Now lets discuss the children they had. The first was Leslie C. Little born April 29, 1904 in Texas, just a year after Ervin and Monte married. She only lived a year, she died Nov. 23, 1905 in Texas. Myrtle E. Little was next, born sometime in 1906. The latest Federal Census I could find for her was a 1930 one showing her living with another family by the name of Leeth. Myrtle is listed as a boarder and she is about 24. The Leeth parents on this census are in their mid 40’s, they have 5 children, ages 26 to 10. I’m not sure what Myrtle did for this family or how long she stayed with them. Possibilities are that she was a nanny or a housekeeper.

The last child born to them was Rubie Jane Little, also called Ruthie in some records. She was born Sept. 2, 1912 in Bexar County, Texas, according to the “Find a Grave” document and Nov. 25, 1913 according to a Texas Birth Index that just says name - Little, Birth County - Bexar, Fathers name - E D Little.

According to a 1940 Federal Census for Ruthie M. Littles, she was 29 in that year. She was married and they made their home in rural Leon, Texas. Listed on the census is her husband, Elmer B. Little and a child Earl D. Littles age 9. was born Aug. 28, 1910. Notice an s is added to the last name Little.

I didn’t find a marriage certificate for Rubie Jane Little but on a family tree I found her husbands name listed as Elmer B. Little. But relax, he is no relation to the Little family we are researching. His parents were Lemuel Monroe Little and his mother was Sarah Narcisabell Reveile. Elmer B. Little died March 18, 1982 in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas.

Elmer B. and Rubie Jane had one son together. His name was Earl D. Littles. Earl was born sometime in 1931 so this is about the time frame that Elmer and Rubie were married. I found lots of leads but they only say Earl Little and I had no proof that these records were for the same Earl I was looking for. I found a Perkins family tree online for an Earl Little. It says he was born June 10, 1935 in Texas, doesn’t list his parents, says he lived in Cleburne, Texas at one time and died Sept. 1, 2011 in New Mexico. This Earl married a Bobbie Joyce Lunsford, 1935 to 2012. They had 3 children but the names are not listed, as it is a private tree. I will have to try and contact the owner of this tree and see if this is our Earl.

Rubie only lived until 1940 and she was only 27 years old at the time. Rubie or Ruthie as it says on her “Find a Grave” Document was buried like most of her relatives in Mule Creek Cemetery, Tennyson, Coke County, Tx. It gives her date of death as April 1, 1940. Ervin D. Little died June 10, 1969, in Bronte, Coke County, Texas. He was 88 years old. Burial was also in Mule Creek Cemetery.
