John Morgan Little is the 6th son of John Gray Little and wife Alvania. He had a huge family so we will be spending a couple of weeks on him. I have been corresponding with a relative of John Morgan’s through email. His name is Aaron Little and his grandfather is John Morgan’s grandson. He had some information for me but not a lot. He thinks his relatives didn’t talk much about each other because there was so many of them. John Morgan and his wife had 11 children. That is a lot of families to keep in touch with.
John Morgan Little was born Oct. 21, 1853 somewhere in Arkansas. In 1860, when he was 7 years old he was living with his parents in Bates, Sebastian County, Arkansas.
I found a marriage certificate for him dated Dec. 24, 1879. John Morgan was 24, he married Mary Magnolia “Maggie” Sutherland. They were married in Sebastian County. They started their family in 1882, when their first child was born.
I found a copy of the 1900 Federal Census record with John Morgan and wife Mary in it. It shows their family living in Big Creek, Sebastian County, Arkansas. It shows that John is married and his spouses name is Maggie M. Little. Marriage year is given as 1880 and it says they have been married for 20 years. It also says that John’s fathers birthplace was North Carolina and his mothers was South Carolina. You can see that lots of information can be learned from a census record. This same census record goes on to list all the family members living with John and Maggie in 1900. It lists Jessee G., age 17, Nannie B. age 15, Rena C. age 13, John F. age 11, Minnie M. age 9, Willie L. age 7, Totsie L. age 6, Ethel Ellen age 4 and a man by the name of Richard J. Dalton, age 27. I have no idea who this last person is. The other names are children of John and Maggie.
The 1910 US Federal Census shows them living in Big Creek, Sebastian County, AR. John is now 56 years old and Maggie is 46 years old. They were 10 years between them. Children listed are Floyd, age 21, Willie, age 17, Totsie age 15, Ethel, age 13, Cleo age 8 and Paul age 1.
Next I found a 1920 US Federal census showing the family living in Fort Smith, Ward 1, Sebastian County, AR. It says John is married to Mary M. Little and they own their own home. Living at this address is John, age 66, Mary age 56 and Alvina P. Little, age 11. Alvina may be a grandchild.
I researched John’s wife Mary “Maggie” and found out her parents names were John and Catherine Southerland. She was born July 12, 1863. The 1870 census shows them at Big Creek, Sebastian County, AR. She had three older siblings according to that census, Robert, Catherine and Gideon.
Mary M. Little died Oct. 6, 1945 and is buried in Lavaca, Sebastian County, AR in the Oak Valley Cemetery. John M. Little died earlier. According to his “Find a Grave” document, he died Jan. 25, 1930 and was buried in Oak Valley Cemetery in Lavaca, Sebastian County, AR. Other family sources say he died in 1937.
Now let us talk about the many children that John Morgan and Mary had. We will start with the first born Jessee. In this case Jessee is a boy and he was born Sept. 18, 1882 in Arkansas. I find him on a 1910 US Federal Census for Center, Sebastian, Arkansas. Jessee G. is 27 and single at this time. He is living with a S.T Burton. I don’t recognize the name Burton.
The 1920 Federal Census show him age 38 and living with his parents and Alvana Little. They are living in Fort Smith and Jessee is still single at this age. I couldn’t find a marriage certificate for Jessee but he is married before the 1940 Federal census and he has two children. The youngest is Janice A. Little, born sometime around 1938 in California. In Feb. of 1939 he has a child named Jessie G. who died at a young age on Aug. 7, 1962.
Jessee G. Little must have married Evelyn sometime around 1935 and 1938. I researched Evelyn Little and she was born a Little. Her father was William Little and they were from Minnesota.
The 1940 US Federal Census for Jessie G. Little finds him age 57 and living in Los Angeles, California. His address is 1555 West Eleventh Place. He owns his own home and it says his highest grade completed was 3rd year of college.
Jesse Gray Little died Oct. 31, 1959 in Mendocino, California. Next week we will continue with more of John Morgan’s children.
