GREENWOOD HERITAGE: June 26-More Little Children

Totsye Little’s husband, John Talmadge Rogers was born Dec. 5, 1889 in Columbia, Arkansas. July 29, 1911 he joined the military. His parents were Robert Ansley Rogers and mother Lennie Eliza Wilson. John died April 25, 1936 and was buried in Mount Prospect Cemetery, Columbia County, Arkansas. Totsye died in Feb. 1977. She was buried in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Jones County, Mississippi.

A child named Noble was listed in the US Federal census as the son of Halimag Rogers and Totsie Little. Last record I could find for Noble was in the 1930 US Federal census. It shows Nobel, age 17 living with her mother, age 37.

Seventh child of John Morgan Little was Willie Lee Little. In this case Willie was a girl born Feb. 15, 1893 in Sebastian County, Arkansas. A marriage license says she was married on Dec. 21, 1913 to Montgomery Phillip Girard in Lavaca, Sebastian County, Arkansas. Montgomery was born April 24, 1888, also in Arkansas. He grew up in the Big Creek area of Sebastian County.

I found a 1920 US Federal Census for Willie Lee Girard, giving her home as Upper, Sebastian, Arkansas. It says she is married and her spouse is Montgomery P. Girard. She is living with husband and daughter Lillian E. Girard. A US city directory for Montgomery P. Girard is dated 1928 and gives their address as 2002 Short 15th, Fort Smith, Arkansas. It says Montgomery’s occupation is car repair.

A 1940 US Federal Census record for Willis Lee shows them living in Fort Smith. Names on the census are Phillip age 51, Willis Lee age 47 and Montgomery G. Girard age 13.

Willie Lee Girard died in May of 1949 in Sebastian County. She was buried in Oak Valley Cemetery in Lavaca, AR

The next child born was Ethel Ellen Little born Nov. 1896 in Arkansas. Sometime between 1910 and 1920, Ethel married Arthur Little. It was probably around 1915, their first child was born in 1916. A 1920 US Federal Census finds Ethel living in Holfrod, Marshall County, OK. Also on the census are 3 children, Hoyt age 3, Deas almost 4 and Willie 3 months old.

A 1930 US Federal Census find Ethel Little living in Burnett, Pottawatomie County, OK. Children are Hoyt age 14, Bessie age 13, Willie age 10 and little Ople age 7. The 1940 census finds Ethel age 44 and now living in Bastrop, Morehouse County, LA. Also on the census are Shelby Little age 20, Edward age 9 and Norma age 3.

Husband Arthur David Little was born June 1, 1893 in Arkansas. He died at the age of 72 on March 22, 1966 in Kingston, Marshall County, OK. The 1940 census find Arthur living in Hidalgo, Texas and occupation as a laborer. Were they separated at this time? Or is this just a work location for him?

Arthur and Ethel’s first child was Hoyt Desmond Little born June 12, 1916 in Oklahoma. I found no marriage license for him. From census records for him, it appears he lived in Oklahoma until 1940 when he moved to Texas. It appears according to 1940 census that he worked at the same place his father worked. He died Feb. 17, 1991 at the age of 74 in California. He was buried in Memory Gardens Cemetery, Concord, Contra Costa County, California.

Ethel and Arthur’s second child was Dessie Owen Little born Feb. 22, 1917 in Marshall County, Oklahoma. He was in the military stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas around 1941. He married Bernadine Lois Soloman Nov. 8, 1942. He died May 14, 1998 in Texas. Bernadine Lois Solomon was born Oct. 27, 1921 in Alamo, Hidalgo County, Texas. She died Dec. 30, 1998 in Alice, Jim Wells County, Texas.

First one of Dessie and Bernadine’s children was Beverly born Oct. 11, 1940 in Texas. I could only find a couple of US Public Records for her, one showing her living in Sealy, Texas, the other one in Houston, Texas. Next was Robert Allen born March 14, 1946 in Texas. I found no spouse for him. His social security index says he died May 18, 1995. Burial was in Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield, Freestone County, Texas Next was Richard David Little. He was born Aug. 18, 1947 in Texas.

Third child of Arthur and Ethel was Willie Lee Barnett Little. Willie in this case is a girl. She was born Jan. 4, 1919 in Little River County, Arkansas and didn’t appear to have married. She died in Dallas, Texas June 4, 1977 at the age of 58. She was buried in Restland Cemetery, Olney, Young County, Texas.

The last child born to Arthur and Ethel was Opal Little. I didn’t find out very much certified information about her. She was born some time in 1923 in Oklahoma. I couldn’t find a birth record or any record that had her birth on it. I found a 1930 and 1940 US Federal Census records. They showed her living with her parents and brothers and sisters. In 1940 she was 17 years old and single, living in Hidalgo County, Texas. I did find a marriage certificate for a John P. Morgan and Opal Little. The marriage date is April 17, 1998. That would make Charles age 65. Opan was born about 1922 and this marriage date would make her 76 at the time. Would she wait this long to marry?

Next week we will try to finish the children of John Gray Little.
