AARP holds Driver Safety Class

AARP Chapter 5099 Fort Smith will host the AARP Driver Safety classroom course on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. The Class will be held at the Greenwood Senior Center (125 W. Center St.) They will begin at 1 p.m. To register, call 479-996-4395.

This 4 hour class is open to all licensed drivers of any age. Seating is limited to the first 35 persons to register on a first come basis. In this four-hour class, you can expect to learn current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging environment. You’ll learn adjustments to accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing, reaction time, how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots, proper following distance behind other automobiles, the safest way to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections, the importance of eliminating distractions such as eating, smoking and cell phone use. This course will be presented by an AARP certified Instructor through a combination of instruction, video and workbook participation. After completing the course you will have a better appreciation of driving challenges and how you can avoid potential collisions and injury to yourself and others.

Those attending will receive a certificate and when presented to their insurance agent should receive an appropriate discount on their insurance premiums. You also have the option of having completed a defensive driving course entered on your driving record. Fee for the course is $14; AARP members receive a $2 discount. There is no test.
