The artist of the month for July is Sharla Derry. Her artwork will be displayed this month at Greenwood City Hall. Derry, a resident of the Greenwood community for over 30 years, has been interested in drawing and painting since she was very young. She started out taking art classes at Greenwood High School and has researched technique on her own since then. Though largely self-taught, she has been inspired by other artists and her environment to capture nature’s finest and most beautiful moments and bring them to the canvas in a way that might help the viewer see life from a different perspective.
Sharla Derry pursues photography with great interest and is inspired creatively by it. Lightning photography, floral images and portrait work are of particular interest in this field.
Derry enjoys creating with a variety of mediums such as watercolor, pastels, acrylics, charcoal, colored pencil, and pen and ink. Donations of her work and services to charities give her a feeling of privilege and duty, sharing her passion via these channels as well as by the traditional means and commissioned work.
Making a piece of paper “come to life” is of special significance in her eyes and she believes that the real gift of her craft is the ability to capture nature’s moments and observe the excitement this brings to others. She is most fulfilled when a scene portrayed brings special and personal memories to the viewer.
Wanda Granderson shares her love of nature in her artwork that can be viewed this month at BancorpSouth Bank. She also shows her patriotism and love for country in other artwork. Take the opportunity to view her art display in the bank lobby during regular banking hours.
