Ken and Debbie Fritsche with the Greenwood Athletic Club present Race Director Randy Davis a check for $500 for their sponsorship of this year’s Freedomfest 5k taking place on July 4th.

Debbie, a runner herself, has run the 5k several times and is excited to help by sponsoring the race. The Fritsche’s bought the Greenwood Athletic Club in 2011 and have made many improvements to the gym. Sponsoring the race is another way they feel they can help promote athletic activities and healthy lifestyles in the area.

This year’s Freedomfest 5k will be held on July 4th at 7:30 a.m. with check-in beginning at 6:30 at the Means Wilkinson Community Room at Farmers Bank. Registration is $20, $30 thereafter. T-shirts will be given to the first 300 registrants.

The race will be chip timed again this year, a process in which runners run across mats that electronically start and stop their time, making for a more accurate time. In addition to chip timing, runners will be able to register on line this year by going to the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce web site and following the link for the Freedomfest 5K run. “This is the first year we have been able to offer the on-line registration and we are very excited about it,” director Davis said. “It is one more way we can improve the race and make it convenient for our runners.”

Cash prizes will be given to the race participants with the most Patriotic themed attire. “The race has become a tradition in Greenwood” Director Davis states. “In addition to being a tradition, we would like to add to it to make it unique and enjoyable.”
