Plans are now being made for the community wide Veterans’ Day Assembly which will be held Monday, November 11th beginning at 10:30 in the Performing Arts Center located on the Greenwood High School Campus. The assembly is hosted by the Hannah Harris VFW Post 6527, the GHS Air Force JrROTC and the GHS Beta Club. This year’s theme is “Standing Brave”. The special guest speaker for this year’s assembly is Theral Henry, WWII veteran, who was present on Iwo Jima when the historic flag was raised.
All veterans are asked to participate in the Parade of Veterans as the beginning of the assembly in which groups of veterans will be introduced according to their decade of service. A virtual parade is also being created by Senior Seminar students Dexter Basacoy, Collin Moore and Brandon Wilhite. These students visited each campus in the Greenwood School District and filmed students for the parade.
Special music will be provided by the Greenwood Junior High and Greenwood High School Male Choirs, under the direction of Roy Zimmerman, by Dr. Lee Krehbiel, Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, on the bagpipes and by soloist, Jessica Kolljeski The GHS Air Force JrROTC, under the direction of Colonel Mike Posey, will be presenting the flag folding ceremony and a photo exhibit of local veterans will be on display in the foyer of the PAC. Anyone who would like to contribute a picture for the display may bring a photo to the high school office before November 8th. The photo will be scanned immediately and returned. Members of the community are invited to come early to view the special photo display.
Special seating will be provided for veterans and their families. Immediately following the assembly all veterans and those serving in the military are asked to come to the stage area for a group picture. The GHS Beta Club will again be hosting lunch for the veterans and their families in the Student Union immediately following the picture.
