August J. Synoground

August J. Synoground, 65 of Greenwood, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, September 17, 2013 while surrounded by his loving children. He was born November 19, 1947 in Greenwood. He was retired from Grace Drilling Co. after twenty years, and was a police officer in California.

He proudly served our nation in the U.S. Navy, receiving the Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, and the Presidential Citation for risking his life pulling another serviceman out of enemy fire while being shot himself. He was a dedicated and loving father to his children, and a true and loyal friend who touched many lives, and who never met a stranger, and he will always be our hero. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two daughters, Breezy Synoground of Sandy, Utah and Keri Synoground of Greenwood; two sons, Austin and Joshua Synoground, both of Greenwood; two brothers, Wayne Synoground and wife, Diane, and Leon Nichols and wife, Frances, all of Greenwood, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Geneva Nichols; his father, August Synoground; sister and brother-in-law, LaVeda and John Griffith, and sister-in-law, Janice Nichols.

His life celebration will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 26 at The Greenwood United Methodist Church with Pastor Danny Owenby officiating. Internment will be 12:00 noon at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home of Greenwood. Viewing will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will visit with friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Austin Synoground, Scott Synoground, Dylan Nichols, LeRoy Tindle, Terry Tindle, Tim Bartlett, Ken Fletcher, and Michael Carter.

Augusts’ greatest passion was his children and their education, and because of that, the family asks that any donations or contributions be made to Farmers Bank, Benefit Account for Austin and Joshua, account #2003127 , P.O. Box 610, Greenwood, AR 72936.
