POLICE BULLETIN — From the desk of Chief Dawson

The annual Guns and Hoses blood drive will take place at City Hall on August 22, 2013. Members of the Arkansas Blood Institute will be on hand from 12:30 until 6:00 p.m. The annual rivalry between the police and fire departments has been heating up this month. The fire department boasts an undefeated record over the course of the competition between the two public safety agencies. The competition challenges both agencies to bring in the most donors for the victory. I and my fellow officers are calling on residents of Greenwood to come out and donate to this great cause. We want to help the A.B.I. bring in as much blood as possible as the need is always high. When you think that every two seconds someone needs blood, it really brings it into perspective. To keep up with demand, 44,000 donations are needed daily and we hope Greenwood can answer the call on this day and donate our share. I’d like to throw one more statistic out there. Nearly five million people will need blood this year. That is a lot of people across this country that will count on donated blood. It could possibly be you or a family member.

If you plan to donate there are a few things that will make your visit run smoothly. Before donating, eat well and try to include foods that are high in iron. Get a good night’s sleep and drink plenty of fluids. Drinking water 30 minutes before giving blood has been found to improve the donation experience. Drinking fluids before your donation helps maintain good circulation throughout your body, and helps prevent light-headedness Please don’t forget your identification for the registration process. If you are unable to make this even and want to donate, or have questions about your ability to donate, visit the Arkansas Blood Institute at http://arkbi.org or call (479)452-5880. Local donors who would like to set up an event can call Marcia at (479)652-2362. I, Chief Will Dawson, and the members of the Greenwood Police Department would like to thank you in advance for your support Greenwood.
