Lady Lions Fall To Hilltoppers In Conference Opener

Freshman Sydney Franklin scored a career-high 16 points and freshman Justyne Huber added 12 points for UAFS, but that wasn’t enough as St. Edward’s rallied for a 64-60 win Thursday night in the Heartland Conference opener in Austin, Texas. It was the first game of a three-day, two-game road swing through the Lone Star State for UAFS (0-5, 0-1), which will play McMurry University at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Franklin and Huber were the only players to score in double-figures for the Lady Lions, who led 26-25 at halftime. UAFS shot 37 percent from the field (21 for 57) – it was 7-for-20 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 65 percent from the free-throw line (11 for 17). UAFS out-rebounded St. Edward’s (5-0, 1-0) by six rebounds (53-47). Sophomore guard Candice Followwell led UAFS with nine rebounds. Turnovers were key in the Lady Lions’ demise, though. UAFS committed 25 turnovers that lead to 20 points for St. Edward’s. Mileka Loydrake led St. Edward’s with 18 points, while guard Stephanie Dekkers and forward Erika Rousculp had 15 and 14 points, respectively. St. Edward’s shot just 29 percent from the field (23 for 80) – it was 5-for-26 shooting from deep – and shot 68 percent from the free-throw line (13 for 19). Rousculp just missed a double-double, leading the Hilltoppers with eight rebounds.
