Lady Lions Pull Away For Big Win

Freshman forward Justyne Huber posted a double-double and two other scored in double-figures to lead the UAFS Lady Lions to a 93-80 Heartland Conference win last Saturday against the University of Texas of the Permian Basin at the Stubblefield Center.

It was the Lady Lions’ second conference game in as many days. UAFS lost 103-78 to Lubbock Christian on Friday at the Stubblefield Center in a game that was rescheduled from Thursday night because of the icy weather in the River Valley.

It was a weekend of delays for the UAFS. Saturday’s game was scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time, but game time was delayed 30 minutes because two of the three referees were late arriving due to an accident on the interstate.

Huber scored a game-high 20 points and topped off her double-double with 11 rebounds. She also had one assist, one steal and three blocks. Sophomore guard Chauntel Terry, who was playing in just her second game of the season after returning from an injury, had 18 points, and freshman guard Sydney Franklin had 11 points.

The trio accounted for six of the Lady Lions’ eight 3-pointers. UAFS shot 26 percent from 3-points range (8 for 31) and shot 39 percent from the field (28 for 71). The Lady Lions (2-7, 2-2) shot 67 percent from the free-throw line (29 for 44).

Huber and sophomore guard Candace Followwell, who had a team-high 15 rebounds to go along with eight points, helped the Lady Lions out-rebound the Falcons 56-50.

UTPB (2-6, 1-3) shot just 34 percent from the field (25 for 73) – it was 9-for-20 shooting from 3-point range – and shot 68 percent from the free-throw line (21 for 31). Forward Valerie Barriga led the Falcons with 21 points and topped off her double-double with 11 rebounds. Guard Keyondra White added 17 points, while guard Katreese Locket had 10 points.

The Lady Lions only led 44-42 at halftime but shot 46 percent from the field (15 for 33) in the final 20 minutes to pull away for the decisive conference win.
