Junior outside hitter Michelle Walker and senior outside hitter Jordan Pickett combined for 21 kills on Saturday as the UAFS volleyball team swept Heartland Conference nemesis St. Edward’s University in the Dig for a Cure Match at the Stubblefield Center.
UAFS won the match in convincing fashion 25-7, 25-19, 25-9. It was the fourth consecutive win by the Lady Lions in the series, which began when UAFS joined the Heartland Conference in 2009.
The Lady Lions and the Hilltoppers have appeared in the conference tournament championship match the past two seasons with UAFS winning both to advance to the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament.
UAFS (10-6) extended its overall win streak to four matches and remained undefeated in conference play at 7-0. St. Edward’s slipped to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Walker collected a team-high 11 kills and compiled a 0.500 hitting percentage, while Pickett had 10 kills and compiled a 0.562 hitting percentage. The duo helped UAFS hit 0.383 for the match.
Senior setter Stephanie Brock collected 27 assists. Senior middle hitter Jordan Erz and Brock had three and two aces, respectively, to lead UAFS, which served seven aces for the match.
Defensively, UAFS dominated St. Edward’s, holding the Hilltoppers to just a 0.040 hitting percentage.
UAFS had five total blocks with freshman Payton Hamilton leading the team with one block and one block assist. Brock and Pickett also had one solo block apiece. Freshman libero Emily Tripp had a team-high 18 digs.
Junior outside hitter Mary Koehler led St. Edward’s with eight kills. Junior setter Loren Kelly had 16 assists, and junior libero Kelly Jimenez and Ashley Rappaport had eight digs apiece.
