Jonesboro got revenge for Greenwood ending its season at last year’s 6A State Tournament by turning the tables on the Lady Bulldogs in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Playing on its home court, Jonesboro beat the Lady Bulldogs in four games, 25-18, 25-17, 20-25, 25-13. The Lady Bulldogs beat Jonesboro in last season’s quarterfinals at Greenwood.
“Jonesboro played very well and they were solid,” Greenwood coach Jennifer Golden said. “They picked up some balls and they were a very scrappy team. I thought we played our normal style of volleyball, but our inconsistencies kind of caught up to us, which is a sign of how young a team we are.”
The Lady Bulldogs (14-16) lose two seniors off this season’s squad, so Golden said she is excited about next season with most of her players returning to the fold.
“We’re going to be even younger next year because we’ve got some ninth graders moving on up, so we’re going to start building for the future,” Golden said.
Wednesday’s loss also snapped a stretch of Greenwood advancing to play for the state championship six out of the past seven seasons, capped by winning the 5A title in 2011. Last season, Greenwood reached the 6A title match before losing to Russellville.
